Limited Edition McLaren Special operations introducing the new M c Laren 650S Can-Am, a limited edition supercar created by mclaren special operations and inspired by our fearsome championship-winning Can-Am race cars 3 WHERE L EGEND S ARE MADE The Canadian-American Challenge Cup was one of the most extreme race series ever conceived. Known to fans simply as Can-Am, it began in 1966, and our founder Bruce McLaren was there from the very start. He loved Can-Am’s lack of regulations, which allowed the kind of innovation he was so good at: there was no minimum weight, for example, and no engine restrictions. In fact, the requirements barely extended beyond two seats, enclosed wheels and minimal safety equipment. The result was a grid full of open-cockpit sports cars that produced over 900bhp and weighed less than 800kg. In its day, Can-Am was faster than Formula 1™. Bruce and his McLaren team quickly came to dominate the series, with five back-to-back drivers’ titles between 1967 and 1971. That legendary success laid the foundations for later wins in both Formula 1™ and the Indy 500, and helped set a course that we continue to follow to this day. 2016 marks 50 years since Can-Am’s debut season. To celebrate, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has created the new McLaren 650S Can-Am, a limited edition supercar inspired by our championship-winning Can-Am years and fearsome Can-Am race cars. 4 5 phenomenal power A supercar inspired by Can-Am sets expectations high, and the McLaren 650S Can-Am does not disappoint. At its heart is a modern 3.8-litre V8. Free-revving and all-aluminium, it is compact, lightweight, and boosted by two ultra-responsive turbochargers to deliver 650PS (641bhp) at a thrilling 7250rpm, and 678Nm (500lb ft) of torque. The result is a torrent of acceleration: sprinting from 0-100kph (0-62mph) takes just 3.0 seconds, 0-200kph (0-124mph) an incredible 8.6 seconds, and the acceleration doesn’t stop until the car reaches a breathtaking 329kph (204mph) top speed. The performance is matched by exceptional stability and control: carbon ceramic brake discs bring the 650S Can-Am to a standstill from 200kph (124mph) in just 124 metres; the Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa tyres provide incredible levels of grip; and the Formula 1™ inspired Brake Steer system creates unrivalled agility. While the Can-Am racers were designed purely for the race circuit, the McLaren 650S Can-Am is equally at home on road or track, with the pioneering ProActive Chassis Control (PCC) suspension system allowing the driver to adjust the Handling and Powertrain modes to suit both the conditions and his or her mood. 6 P u r e E x h i l a r at i o n Can-Am cars were some of the most crowd-pleasing race cars of all time: ferocious engines delivered astonishing lap times and bellowing soundtracks, and – as the competition intensified and innovation blossomed – outrageous aerodynamic aids came to define the cars’ outlandish silhouettes. Fans flocked to watch Can-Am cars battling on sun-bleached circuits, as world-class racing drivers stepped up to the challenge. The new McLaren 650S Can-Am translates the thrill of those Can-Am racers to our Super Series range for the road. The spine-tingling engine sound roars through a new polished stainless steel exhaust silencer; the unique carbon fibre hardtop retracts for that added rush of open-top driving; and active aerodynamics create astonishing levels of grip. Light and agile, with wonderfully tactile steering feel, the McLaren 650S Can-Am is the ultimate driver’s Spider, and a fitting tribute to the iconic Can-Am racers of the past. 8 Alcantara® shown is for illustration purposes only – final specification will vary p i o n e e r i n g t e c h n o lo gy Exploiting Can-Am’s liberal rulebook, McLaren Can-Am cars of the 1960s and early ’70s were incredibly light and powerful, and were at the forefront of aerodynamics in their day. The pace of technological development at McLaren has been relentless ever since, and ultra-lightweight construction defines the McLaren 650S Can-Am. The carbon fibre MonoCell at the heart of every McLaren brings stiffness, lightness and strength, ensuring unrivalled safety and superlative handling. The 650S Can-Am also introduces a new carbon fibre bonnet, a carbon fibre retractable hardtop and tonneau, and a carbon fibre Airbrake to further reduce weight. Aside from the advanced materials found in the McLaren 650S Can-Am, sophisticated active aerodynamics help produce levels of grip that were unimaginable to those brave Can-Am drivers. Sitting flush with the rear bodywork at low speeds, the carbon fibre Airbrake quickly extends to reduce stopping distances and adjusts its angle to increase downforce for sure-footed handling at speed. 10 sta n d - o u t st yl e The designers at McLaren Special Operations (MSO) took inspiration from the styles and colours of the 1960s and early ’70s for the McLaren 650S Can-Am. Three new exterior colours are available, evoking McLaren Can-Am cars of the era. Mars Red echoes the first McLaren M1B that Bruce raced during that inaugural 1966 season; Papaya Spark refers to our iconic championship-winning cars; and Onyx Black is inspired by the many customer teams that ran McLarens during the era. Even the 650S Can-Am’s forged alloy wheels, with their black five-spoke designs and polished silver rims, are reminiscent of our Can-Am racers. Period liveries, specially created by MSO, draw further parallels to a golden era of motorsport, and are available on request. Inside, the driver-focused cabin features black leather electric sports seats trimmed with high-grip Alcantara® centres that complement the bespoke exterior colours, while contrast stitching and extended carbon fibre trim complete the striking look. 12 m c l a r e n 6 5 0 S CAN -AM Standard Exterior Features Standard Interior Features MSO Visual Carbon Fibre Bonnet, Retractable Hardtop and Tonneau MSO Front Fender Vents MSO Polished Stainless Steel Quad-Tailpipe Exhaust MSO Five-Spoke Can-Am Wheels, Titanium Bolts and Black Brake Calipers Carbon Fibre Airbrake MSO 650S Can-Am Carbon Fibre Sill Covers Branded Side Blades MSO Titanium Coolant Cap MSO 650S Can-Am Exterior Paint Palette MSO Black Nappa Leather Interior with Alcantara® Seat Centres and Contrast Stitch Electric, Heated Memory Seats MSO 650S Can-Am Dedication Plate Carbon Fibre Interior Upgrade Carbon Fibre Extended Interior Upgrade 14 technical specification efficiency Engine: Power: Torque: Transmission: 0-100kph (0-62mph): Maximum speed: Construction: CO2, g/km EU (g/mile US) 275 (416) CO2 per PS, g/PS 0.42 Wheels: Brakes: Tyres: Dry weight: 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 650PS (641bhp) 678Nm (500lb ft) 7-speed SSG 3.0 seconds 329kph (204mph) Carbon fibre MonoCell; plus carbon fibre bonnet, retractable hardtop, tonneau and Airbrake Black five-spoke design with polished silver outer rim, 19” x 8.5” front; 20” x 11” rear Carbon ceramic discs Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa 235/35 R19 front; 305/30 R20 rear 1370kg/3020lb Fuel Efficiency, EU mpg (litres/100km)* Combined 24.2 (11.7) Urban 16.1 (17.5) Extra Urban 33.2 (8.5) Fuel Efficiency, US mpg** Combined 18 Highway 22 City 16 Combined usage, US gallons/100 miles 5.6 *Official fuel consumption figures in UK mpg (l/100km) for the McLaren 650S CanAm (3,799 (cc) petrol, 7-speed Seamless Shift dual clutch Gearbox (SSG)): urban 16.1 (17.5), extra urban 33.2 (8.5), combined 24.2 (11.7).
